The sculptures of Moans and Groans recreate the sensation of the wind in the trees. Through branches equipped with vibration motors, a custom-made electronic circuit translates seismic recordings captured between the roots and in the crevices of trees in Denmark back into vibration motors known from consumer electronics.
Viewers are invited to touch the sculptures and feel the vibrations they transmit as they resynthesize the experience of the tree rocking in the wind, from the perspective of the tree itself.
The title refers equally to the activities of the trees recorded – how they react to movements and wind in their surroundings — and the activities commonly associated with vibrator motor technology.
Moans and Groans is the first part of the long-term project Haptic Fields, a speculative artistic investigation of material vibrations in nature, biology, humanity and technology.
The first exhibition of Moans and Groans is at Notam in Oslo, Norway, where the sculptures are installed from April 2025 to ultimo June 2025.

Each sculpture contains a custom-designed audio player that is able to play back audio and translate it into vibration motor signals. It is designed by Mads Kjeldgaard 2025 for hyaline.systems, and both the electronics as well as the software running on it are open source:
