The sculptures of Moans and Groans explore this fundamental question: How do we listen with our skin? How does nature with its skin? These questions are explored through a series of sound sculptures that translate recordings of trees’ movements into vibrations in tree branches.
The sculptures of Moans and Groans play back audio recordings of trees’ movements in the wind – recordings made in Denmark, a flat land with lots of wind, using a special device allowing to pick up the deep, low frequency vibrations the wind causes in the tree trunks as it passes through the forest. The recordings were made from the perspective of the tree itself: In the dirt between its roots as well as in crevices in the its trunk.
Viewers are invited to touch the sculptures and feel the vibrations they transmit as they attempt to resynthesize the experience of the tree rocking in the wind.
Each sculpture contains a vibrator motor. Using custom electronics, they repurpose technology from sex toys, smartphones, and gamepads to translate audio into vibrations, a tactile language well known by anyone in our modern era through the everyday use of consumer electronics.
The title refers equally to the activities of the trees recorded – how they react to movements and wind in their surroundings – as well as the activities commonly associated with vibrator motor technology.
Activities
The first exhibition with these sculptures will be at Notam in Oslo, Norway where they will be installed from April 2025.
These are the activities planned for 2025 for this project:
- April 23rd, 2025: Workshop - Haptic Feedback at Notam. Click here to sign up.
- April 25th, 2025: Talk and Fernissage, Notam, Oslo, Norway. Click here for more information.
- April-June, 2025: Exhibition - Moans and Groans at Notam in Oslo, Norway.
Electronics

Making electronics for Moans and Groans 2025.
Each sculpture contains a custom-designed audio player that is able to play back audio and translate it into vibration motor signals. It is designed by Mads Kjeldgaard 2025 for hyaline.systems, and both the electronics as well as the software running on it are open source:
- Hardware: Teensy Haptic Audio Player.
- Software: Haptic Fields Firmware.
