Moans and Groans (2025)
Listening through touch – a series of vibrator sound sculptures.

The sculptures of Moans and Groans explore this fundamental question: How do we listen with our skin? How does nature with its skin?
These questions are explored through a series of sound sculptures that translate recordings of trees’ movements into vibrations in tree branches.

A twig with a vibration motor attached inside, playing back vibrations from a tree recording. Photo: Mads Kjeldgaard, 2025.
Each sculpture contains a vibrator motor. Using custom electronics, they repurpose technology from sex toys, smartphones, and gamepads to translate audio into vibrations, a tactile language well known by anyone in our modern era through the everyday use of consumer electronics. Viewers are invited to touch the sculptures and feel the vibrations they transmit.
The title refers equally to the activities of the trees recorded – how they react to movements and wind in their surroundings – as well as the activities commonly associated with vibrator motor technology.
The first exhibition with these sculptures will be at Notam in Oslo, Norway where they will be installed from April 2025.
